Ideas for CBC

Perhaps I’ll have time to write this up properly later but for now these are just some ‘thinking out loud’ notes.

Podcasting. Apparently we’re moving big in that direction. Cool. Are we also thinking about how to integrate our listener’s podcasts? Right now we have folks call in on the phone to leave their comments. Cool. But we could also have folks submit podcasts as comments on the shows. These comments could be linked to from the show to be downloaded. Producers might chose the best comments to include them in the show or a future version. But all the comments could sit there on the server for the uber curious to check out.

Turn it over to our listeners.

Make use of BitTorrent. We host space and bandwidth but by encouraging others to get involved the corporations costs are shared with the users. The more popular a show is the cheaper it is to distribute.

There are lots of partial solutions to all of this out there. A lot of them are based on open standards which means soon we’ll have mostly complete solutions. We should probably be investing in tech people with the chops to put the infrastructure in place for us.

We’ll need someone to keep an eye on the incoming material for some kind of quality control and tidying up.

I’m sure that some of what I’m talking about is already in place or being considered. We did manage to do Zed TV after all.

Hmmm. I just tuned in there for the first time in a couple of years and the site rememberd who I am. It looks good. But as always I get bored waiting for the very heavy content to download. So I leave.

I’m sitting on a pretty fast connection and I get much better response from other sites. I think we need to improve our infrastructure.

This has turned into a ramble. Back to work!
